What I was surprised at a supermarket in Tokyo is how few fish were offered there. Tuna and salmon were occupied on the shelves. In Toyama which faces Toyama Bay, on the other hand, there are many fresh and delicious seafood in the supermarket.
Enjoying variety of seafood throughout the year, I believe winter is the best seafood season in Toyama. The most famous fish that comes from Toyama Bay in winter is absolutely “buri (yellowtail)”. The yellowtails that come to Toyama Bay in winter are in the pre-spawning period, it means they are fattiest (yummiest!).
Buri is also one of the most familiar and loved seafood in Toyama. There are two exapmles of their popularity; 1) Winter starts with yellowtails in Toyama. Early winter a blast blows up with stormy thunders in Toyama bay. It is called “buri okoshi (the yellowtail call)”. When this stormy thunders sound, a lot of yellowtails are caught. 2) People love to eat yellowtails as a special new-year feast in Toyama. The fish is called “”success fish” bringing in success because their names change when they grow up.
Not only be loved by Toyama people, people out of Toyama have recently paid attention to the fish. The yellowtail, Himi Kan-buri, that are caught in Toyama bay and delivered to the harbours in Himi are sold at a high price at the Tukiji Fish Market, the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world, and attract many tourists to Toyama to enjoy the superb cuisine.
As a result of the nationwide popularity, “Himi kan-buri” found its way into the world!! On 16th January, a seminar that promotes “Himi kan-buri” was hold in Hong Kong. Although farmed yellow tails are well known in Hong Kong, most people do not know how delicious wild ones are. To sample the delights of Toyama cuisine, a chef from Toyama performed how to cut up a big yellowtail and cooked buri dishes. It must have been an exciting event.
One of our naft products, Shizuku Tin Tumbler collection, also joined such a wonderful event as a Sake cup. Yellowtails from Himi, Japanese sake from Toyama, and our Shizuku Tin tumblers…What a lovely marriage!
I hope people at the event enjoyed Toyama’s winter cuisine.

About Shizuku Tin Tumbler Collection;
‘Shizuku Tin Tumbler Collection’ is inspired by the slow dropping of water, ‘shizuku’, which form stalactites slowly taking million years. Relax and enjoy sipping a drink, letting your mind drift back over the scenic grandeur and everlasting time.
Tin is highly antibacterial, removing odd flavours and improving the taste of sake, while foods arranged on a tumbler look stunning with their faint reflections mirrored in the surface.
